DIVISION: Superior Court
CLASS DEFINITION: This class is accountable for accurately interpreting in simultaneous, consecutive and sight translation modes between English and the target language in legal proceedings for the Judicial Branch and various court service programs statewide; for accurately translating written documents between English and the target language.
GUIDELINES FOR CLASS USE: Interpreting and translating assignments may be in courtrooms or other locations, in support of court operations. These assignments may be in court proceedings, trials, hearings, arraignments, or ex-parte matters. Target language typically is Spanish but may be other languages as required by defendants, witnesses, litigants and other nonEnglish speaking individuals.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of a Lead Court Interpreter or other employee of higher grade.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Performs the three modes of interpreting (simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation) from English into another oral or manual language and reverse in a variety of court proceedings, hearings, attorney/client conferences, pre-arraignment communications and related matters in person and by remote devices;
- makes court announcements in Spanish or other non-English languages as directed by the judge;
- maintains records of services provided;
- prepares activity reports;
- collects and enters data into automated recordkeeping systems;
- participates in study and training activities individually or in groups in order to develop and maintain interpreting and translating skills; at the direction of the court,
- may, by interpreting, assist defendants in completing court-related forms;
- drafts translations of forms and documents in the target language;
- performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE. SKILL AND ABILITY: Simultaneous, consecutive and sight interpreting and written language proficiency with college-level vocabulary in English and Spanish or other specified language; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; basic computer usage skills.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
General Experience: Demonstrated ability to perform simultaneous, consecutive and sight interpreting and written language proficiency in the target language.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Incumbents will be required to travel in the course of their daily work.
