Instructions for Submitting a Request for an Opinion

The Committee on Judicial Ethics began operation on August 1, 2008, after Hon. Chase T. Rogers, Chief Justice, adopted the Policy and Rules of the Committee. The Committee on Judicial Ethics provides formal and informal advisory opinions to judges, senior judges, judge trial referees, family support magistrates and judicial or family support magistrate nominees with respect to the rules of court and statutes that govern the ethical and professional conduct of judges.

The Committee on Judicial Ethics consists of five members. Four of the members are judges or judge trial referees and one of the members is a law professor who specializes in professional ethics. The Chief Justice has appointed one alternate and may appoint other alternates as necessary.

All opinions rendered by the Committee on Judicial Ethics are advisory in nature. No opinion is binding on the Judicial Review Council or the Superior Court, Appellate Court or Supreme Court in the exercise of their judicial discipline responsibilities.

Requests for formal advisory opinions must be made by letter, addressed and emailed to Attorney Viviana L. Livesay, Secretary, Committee on Judicial Ethics, viviana.livesay@jud.ct.gov, Attorney Steven Bidwell, Assistant Secretary, Committee on Judicial Ethics, steven.bidwell@jud.ct.gov, or Attorney Kevin J. DiAdamo, Assistant Secretary, Committee on Judicial Ethics, kevin.diadamo@jud.ct.gov. Requests for informal opinions may be made by email to Attorney Livesay, Attorney Bidwell or Attorney DiAdamo at the email addresses noted above.
