Senior Justice William J. Sullivan
Senior Justice William J. Sullivan
was born in Waterbury,
Connecticut on March 12, 1939. He graduated from Providence College in
1962
with a Bachelor of Arts degree and earned his Juris Doctor from
Marshall-Wythe School of Law, College of William and Mary, in 1965. He
then served as a Captain in the United States Army from 1965-1966, which
included a tour in Vietnam. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for merit,
the Air Medal and various campaign ribbons.

After receiving an
honorable discharge from the Army, Justice Sullivan practiced law
in Waterbury. In addition to practicing law, he served as Civil Service
Commissioner (1974-75) and Corporation Counsel (1976-78) for the City of
Waterbury. Justice Sullivan was appointed a Superior Court Judge
in 1978. In his law career on the trial bench, he presided over
criminal, civil, family, juvenile and housing matters.
In 1997, he was nominated to serve on
the Appellate Court by Governor John G. Rowland and in 1999 he was
elevated to the position of Supreme Court Justice. He was nominated by
Governor Rowland to be Chief Justice in December 2000 and was sworn in
on January 22, 2001. On April 15, 2006, Justice Sullivan elected to take
senior status.
Chief Justice Sullivan and his wife
reside in Waterbury and are the parents of four sons.
